Art in Alternative Spaces has been an important channel to give an entirely new approach to the works ideally shown in galleries, essentially known as "White Cube" spaces. Spaces to show art in its entirety must have a neutral environment, which is why art galleries are architectural spaces with white walls, which can be molded to the requirement of the artwork displayed. With Alternative Spaces, the displayed art responds differently with the surrounding, and brings about a whole new meaning with the way it reacts with the audience.

Chameleon Art Projects brings the second alternative art space exhibition in Mumbai, Cocoon Fine Rugs, in a space which displays contemporary carpets. Within a 4,000-sqft minimalistic showroom, these works will be exhibited and incorporated with the existing interiors.

Viewing art in a gallery space proposes the works' relevance and singularity. The process of production is taken very seriously by the artists, and must be given equal deference when exhibited. However, when viewing the same work in a non-gallery space, it almost seems as if the work has a different personality. The afterthought of viewing it in an alternative space is the main goal of the "Alternative Space". It is the artwork that possesses the versatility of responding differently in different surroundings

Out of the gallery and off the walls. This exhibition exhibits five artists whose works have been selected specifically to compliment the space. Each artist comes from a specific practice, however there is an element in each work that justifies them to each other, and with the space.

Boshudara Mukherjee is a Mumbai based artist, who slices up painted canvases and weaves them into complex patterns, to give it an almost sculptural effect. The delicate framework of each piece reveals the tedious process to create each piece. She is represented by the prestigious Volte art gallery based in Mumbai, and also won the INLAKS Shivdasani Foundation Award.

Dina Goldstein is a photographer based in Canada, whose works are staged productions, which consist of a narrative with layers of social and personal references in relation to the utopian idea of fantasy. Her series, The Fallen Princesses place fairy tale characters in modern day scenarios, in an environment of conflict, where the 'happily ever after' is replaced with the outcome of reality.

Sameer Tawde is a Mumbai based photographer. His photographs are complex narratives, which capture the daily life with in urban culture. Manipulating the effects offered by the camera, he is able to achieve in an image many layers of thought processes. He has been recently selected for the prestigious Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Residency in 2013.

Sharmistha Ray is an artist based in Mumbai, whose abstract paintings consist of layers of paint impasto to create a palette of color field compositions based on philosophy, geography, and urban existence. Her works blend beautifully within this context and blur the boundaries of techniques of carpet making and painting to result in visual similarities.

Suhas Shilkar is a Goan based artist whose works are based on form, color and composition. His abstractions bear no narrative, which makes his works even more interesting to comprehend, where each work has the seriousness of construction and arrangement and at the same time the playfulness of its physicality.
